RE: 2008 Ford F350; 973 Miles And 102 Gallons Later

N9MB Thanks for the numbers. Sure many of us with Cummins and Duramax powered vehicles may tend to say, we can do better, but not many of us are pulling 14K+ pounds with a 4:30 geared dual wheel truck. My only problem with your post, I had a difficult time concentrating on those numbers, kept thinking about that 3600 Bighorn. Beautiful camper, would no doubt be my next one if buying today.

RE: Check out these Dyno numbers - 08 Diesels

IB516, Thanks for the information. Actual numbers and especially those with visual confirmation are always a joy. As for the transmission comment, with a name like CHV_FRK, our friend must be a fan of those bow tie products. He along with many others. With some of the neat stuff they are building these days, I don't blame him. So in light of that name, I just gotta take it as a light hearted comment made about " brand X" and be thankful for him and everyone who comes on here and shares experiences, stories, and real information. That little comment helped cause this very interesting thread to extend to 2 pages and promise of more. Keeps me up late at night and continually coming back.

RE: Why do most diesel pickups fall 50% in the first year?

I think you friend is not well informed and needs to learn his business a bit better. KenMy friend who is not informed bought and sold twenty five hunderd cars and trucks last year. He steal them and sell them in South America?

RE: Might buy a diesel...HELP

I've read that the 05's and 06's were much better. If I were buying one, I would insist to speak to the previous owner about the truck. Just another opinion and worth no more than that of anyone else, but if a truck had one owner and that person assured me he had no trouble with it, I would certainly consider it.

RE: Might buy a diesel...HELP

BigBen55. You said in your original post that it HAS to be a crew cab. This alone would cause me to look first for a late model Chevy/GMC. I have opinions of the "Classic" and newer updated versions, but are merely opinions and have little merit when asked for recommendations. I do however know I would look for the LBZ version of the Duramax, mostly because it's the latest of a series of new engines and would tend to have the fewest "bugs". While I believe the Cummins to be a very good powerplant, the "quad cab" is a bit tight in the back seat. I don't tend to label it as a crew cab or extended cab. More like a combination of both. It, regardless of what you call it has a rather uncomfortable back seat for adult long distance travel. The Mega cab is nice, but HUGE, and perhaps a bit expensive. Ford is my favorite USA brand, and I think a lot of the trucks. I do however tend to believe the 6.0 may give less satisfaction in terms of fuel burn, noise, and reliability. I like the Dodge, but not the back seat, I like the Ford but not the engine. Kinda leaves the GM twins as perhaps the best candidate to compare the others to.

RE: The hunt is on, where to look....

Outdoorsman I read your first post about driving to another location to purchase, but didn't notice your reference to EBay at all. When I referenced EBay, I didn't think anyone had mentioned it and wondered if most believe it to be perhaps less than an ideal method. That’s why I said it may or not be a good idea. I now see where you perhaps thought I was referring to your original post and assumed I had insulted you.

RE: Tired of oil leaks in my 03 Duramax 1 ton

That is another reason I chose gas, they don't have much of that. Must have been that dealer friend of yours, the one who sold 500 cars last year. The one who so knowingly told you that the diesel trucks are worth nothing these days. He no doubt told you of all the oil leaking problems normally found in the Duramax powered trucks. That knowledge then caused you to "supposedly" buy a supercharged 5.3 and swear every chance you get to trash mouth the diesels. Actually it's a conspiracy; all the other Duramax owners here are sworn not to tell us of those leaks. Perhaps that’s why until now, we've been unaware of them. Keep us posted there Supercharged.

RE: The hunt is on, where to look....

OUTDOORSMAN I didn't make the comment for you, although some of your previous remarks toward other well intending posters have certainly caused me to want to comment. You wouldn't have liked what I would have said so I didn't. Perhaps I should have said "MadMav, I don't know if it would be worth looking at Ebay for you or not, but it's certainly another source. I purchased a car through it a couple years ago and the transaction went fine. I recommend you consider it. Would that have been any better for some outdoor jerk who really don't have any business at all commenting on what I say to another poster? Would it? If so I'll try to do better next time.

I don't care if it's more affordale than it was 45 years ago or not. I only care that it's a lot lessa affordabe than it was 3 years ago.

RE: When will small diesel pickups show up?

In spite of Supercharged's need to create a rise from owners of diesel trucks, his question has some merit. We're all mad at oil prices and still fuming because our expensive gas guzzling SUV's and half ton pickup trucks are not in much demand now. 2 years ago we bought in record numbers these vehicles and wouldn't have purchased high mileage diesel powered smaller trucks, now that the economy promises to cause a lot of unemployed people and with fuel prices showing no sign of being affordable again, we want what only a short time ago wouldn't sell if it were available. It takes years to develop an approved new vehicle. Especially one with a completely diferent powerplant. Now that the "times" seem to confirm a small diesel in a mid size truck makes a lot of sense, would we even buy it? Could it be made to sell for much less than 25 to 30K. Maybe not. Would a large percentage of population be willing to spend that much money on something new? Maybe not. I believe we'll see those trucks many are asking for, but it won't be for quite some time.

RE: Will twenty thousand buy a new diesel pickup

My brother wants one, and he tells me they can't give them away right now. I haven't look at any new ones for a couple years now. So your brother wants one, but like you he knows they're worthless, no one wants them and the dealers can't give them away, You on the other hand havn't looked at them for a couple years. The half ton Chevy pulls the 5th wheel fine. Tell him to save his 20K and just borrow yours when he needs it. Work out a every other weekend plan.

RE: Pros/Cons of GM diesels

Even those of us who do not have or drive a GM diesel can be reasonably sure of it's ability to provide satisfaction. Considering the hundreds of posts here from those driving them, certainly a huge percentage are words of praise for the power, economy, reliability, and one thing the Duramx does better than the CTD or PSD, overall refinement.

RE: 2010 GM Ultimax Diesel, 6.9L, 425hp/750tq ?

Travelnutz, as always, thanks for your input into where our trucks, cars and power plants that propel them are heading. I don't always agree with you, but if you write it, I read it. Thanks again, and all the best to you and your lovely wife while up north and those future trips. Your knowledge, wisdom and contributions do not unnoticed or unappreciated.

RE: 2009 ram heavy-duty gets new hemi

I'm sure the Ford will still be the tow king, but in actuality, one could tow a given trailer across the country with one, get into another and realize very little difference.

RE: Is a dually a must have for towing large 5er?

You didn't tell what you think is large but over 32ft would make me want a dually. Sorry. Considering the Montana 3400RL, which is I think about 37' and about 11,000 lbs dry. Keystone advertises the 3400 RL at near 2500 pounds pin weight. Add options, a 5th wheel hitch, accessories, people, fuel and whatever you will be hauling in your camper's basement and you may be getting near the top of a 3500/350 single wheel axle limit. You could do it with a single wheel and be ok, but like most others, I would look for a dually for those chores.

RE: Would you still buy a 4x4 if you had

to pay cash for it. That means if you don't have cash for a new 30 or 40 thousand dollar pickup you can't vote. This means if you had the cash it is one thing, if you don't is another thing. Credit purchase don't count. The answer was no yesterday, and now that the 30 or 40 thousand dollars you mentioned are worth several thousand less due to the market crash today, the answer is still NO!

RE: Banks EconoMind Diesel Tuner

Has anyone had any experience with the Banks EconoMind Diesel Tuner as advertised in the October issue of Trailer Life? Did not see it on their web page, so it must be new. One guy claims his average "went from 14.2 to 19.5 with a peak of 23 mpg on the interstate." I am sure he wasn't towing, but still at today's fuel prices, if this product worked, it would be worth looking at. I have a 2007 Chevy "Classic" Duramax. Just came back from Colorado, drove 2400 miles and averaged 10.8 MPG towing a 34' 5th wheel. Chip N Dale People who have installed similar tuners have reported an increase in fuel mileage. The question then becomes, do you believe it. As mentioned, they may cause the overhead mpg indicator to give a erronious reading making the user think he is actually burning less fuel. Perhaps the Banks (which is not junk at all, but expensive) and others may help burn less fuel. but one thing you can be absolutely sure of. None will provide enough fuel savings to pay for themselves in a reasonable timeframe, if ever. Therefore if saving money is your objective you are probably better off leaving it stock.

RE: 2 WD diesel gets more mileage?

Read the (same old) ongoing debate of 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive posts after Supercharged put a bit of his famous "humor" into the thread. Most were the typical real men don't need it, or real men wouldn't do without it BS. Then went back and reread the original question looking for any solicitation of advice about which to choose. Wasn't there, only fuel mileage difference question. Hey Supercharged, ya did it again,,,,
